About

The Richmond Gem & Mineral Society (RGMS) is a non-profit organization located in Richmond Virginia. Formed in 1956, RGMS serves the Richmond Metro and surrounding counties and is open to anyone with an interest in rocks, minerals, gems, fossils, lapidary, geology and other related fields. The society is a member of both the Eastern Federation of Mineralogical and Lapidary Society (EFMLS) and the American Federation of Mineralogical Society (AFMS) and offers a place where like-minded individuals can gather to share knowledge, learn and enjoy "rock talk."

We meet the 2nd Tuesday of every month.  Everyone begins to show up around between 6:30 and 7:00 p.m. to socialize prior to the start of the meeting promptly at 7:30 p.m. Members will often bring some interesting rock and fossil specimens they have collected as well as lapidary and/or jewelry pieces. We also have a table set up where you can enter in a drawing to win a rock or fossil related prize donated by the club!  Social time is followed by a short business meeting, a guest speaker and a social snack break.

The society sponsors field trips including rock hounding digs, group educational trips, and fossil hunts. There is also a club lapidary that meets two nights a month. There are other annual events which include an RGMS educational booth at the Spring and Fall “Treasures of the Earth” shows at Richmond International Raceway Show Complex, our annual fund-raising auction in October and hosting the RGMS Rock Swap & Sale in November (one of the best swaps on the East Coast)!

RGMS welcomes everyone of all ages (including guests) to come to a meeting and have the opportunity to see and talk to people who share a common interest in rocks, minerals, fossils and lapidary arts.
